B14 World Championship title win to Bancroft and Grace from McCrae Yacht Club

The final day of the championships saw an early start with the first signal at 11.00 catching out some competitors still arriving at the start as the fleet started in 18 knots of breeze.

Team Gill and Toxic (Dave Lorimer and Raf Heale) led the fleet off the line from the pin end, Toxic was first around the top mark from Sunsail/Zhik (Scott Cunningham and Pup) North Sails/Gul (David Hayes and Rich Bell), Team Gill (Nick Craig and MJ) and Guy Bancroft/David Grace. Despite many place changes the positions were the same at the finish.

For race 8 the wind had increased to borderline survival conditions, with a full foam-up leading to several boats throughout the fleet hitting the tide, including Sunsail/Zhik cartwheeling on the startline just before the gun. A full on survival race followed with Toxic showing their expertise in the extreme conditions taking their second bullet of the day. They were followed home by Fells/Ramus and Bancroft/Grace in second and third.

Sanity prevailed and the fleet were sent home with the 2010 B14 World Championship going to defending champion Guy Bancroft with new crew David Grace from McCrae YC in Australia. Second place went to Sunsail/Zhik and GBR’s Team Gill

The next B14 Worlds are scheduled for January 2012 in Perth, Western Australia.
