Australian Salmon (Arripis Trutta) are a popular sportsfish in around Mornington. They are a migratory, pelagic or semi-pelagic species of the cool and temperate waters, and are found right around the southern seaboard of Australia. There are 2 sub species: eastern and western Australian salmon whose distributions overlap in Port Phillip Bay.
The Australian salmon is a near-shore species, found in bays, along beaches and rocky shorelines. This makes fishing for Aussie salmon popular along the coastline of Mornington to Mt Martha, as well as off Mornington Pier. If angling from a boat, look for diving sea birds as these indicate the baitfish the salmon have herded up. Usually found in depths ranging between 2 and 20 metres in the bay. Popular methods of catching these fish include trolling lures, like metal slugs, casting soft plastics and good old reliable bait. Heavier tackle, as is used for snapper fishing, is suitable for catching these sportsfish.
